Central locking

Doors which lock electrically either from the drivers door lock or a remote fob.

Central locking is an automated system in modern vehicles that allows the driver to lock or unlock all the doors and sometimes the trunk or boot with a single action, typically through a remote key fob, keyless entry, or by pressing a button inside the car. This system simplifies the locking and unlocking process, especially when you need to secure multiple doors at once.

When you press the button on your key fob or inside the car, the central locking system triggers an electric motor to simultaneously engage or disengage the locks on all the doors. This allows for the convenience of locking or unlocking all the doors with just one action, rather than manually locking each door.

Central locking is usually linked to the car’s electronic control unit (ECU), and the system can be activated by various means, such as:

  • Remote key fob: When you press a button on the fob, it sends a signal to the ECU to lock or unlock the doors.
  • Keyless entry system: When the key fob is in proximity to the car, it may automatically unlock the doors as you approach or lock them when you walk away.
  • Internal switch: A button or switch inside the car, usually near the driver's seat, allows you to control all door locks from within the vehicle.

In addition to the basic locking and unlocking function, central locking systems can have added security features such as anti-theft protection. For instance, some vehicles will automatically lock all doors when the car starts moving, or lock all doors when the car is in drive mode.

If the central locking system malfunctions or gets out of sync with the car's key fob or ECU, it may prevent doors from locking or unlocking correctly. Auto locksmiths often have the tools to diagnose and fix problems related to central locking, including reprogramming or replacing fobs, resetting the ECU, or fixing mechanical issues with the door locking mechanisms.

If you're ever locked out of your car and the central locking isn’t working properly, an auto locksmith can also help unlock the doors using their specialized tools and methods.
